Cancer Awareness Month No.2 - Leukemia Patients in the Philippines Face Many Challenges

Writer: EPCALMEPCALM

Updated: Feb 20

Leukemia patients in the Philippines face many challenges. Financial constraints, psycho-social problems, and limited access to quality treatment are the major obstacles reported, which significantly contribute to the growing cancer burden in the country. In 2022 alone, there were more than 110,000 cancer deaths recorded in the country, representing the third leading cause of death. Almost 190,000 new diagnoses were reported in the same year.

The cost of chemotherapy drugs and other treatments can be prohibitive. Fatigue, depression, and anxiety are prominent symptom among acute leukemia patients. They interfere with the patients’ activities of daily living, and their ability to carry out social roles.

Recent medical reviews also included spiritual and social dimensions, which are often least reported and studied, but can nonetheless impact on a leukemia patient’s quality of life. This National Cancer Awareness Month, EPCALM features leukemia-focused information. Together with the Blood Cancer Alliance of the Philippines, we hope to provide a platform to spread information about prevention, early detection, treatment options, as well as available resources for patients and their families.
