After more than two years, the EPCALM Family Huddle was conducted “face-to-face” on 19 November 2022 at our new residence - The EPCALM House (EH) in New Manila, Quezon City - and simultaneously live-streamed via Zoom for those who could not make it in person. It was a heart-warming occasion, as our patients and volunteers alike shook hands, hugged, and exchanged pleasantries – happy that they were now able to see familiar faces that they only used to see virtually onscreen.
The Family Huddle has been a venue for patients and their families to keep in touch with other patients. Starting in mid-2020, it was conducted on a monthly basis. This was designed to improve and regularize the outreach to patients, especially during the crucial months of the pandemic when communication and mobility were restricted.
In the Family Huddles, various concerns of the patients were shared, as they were able to touch base with their assigned Social Workers. Birthday greetings, messages of assurance from EPCALM officials, devotionals, prayers for healing, group games, raffle prizes, and group singing were among the regular parts of the monthly program.
During the 19 November Huddle, Fr. Percival Tayem, OFM, led the devotion as he also gave personal insights to encourage the patients to always be hopeful in the midst of their medical challenges.
Meanwhile, Kim Gan, a serviced patient, shared her inspiring personal testimony and leukemia journey. Those on Zoom are participated in the parlor games and raffle, with cash prizes. A lunch fellowship capped the activity, sponsored by former EPCALM Trustee, Ms. Vicky Antonino. Everybody went home with a give-away loot bag containing dishwashing liquid and fabric softener.
In 2023, the Family Huddle will be held every other month, with EPCALM activities in between; the first Huddle for the year is scheduled on Saturday, 25 February, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at The EPCALM House.
